How can I increase blood pressure ? Low blood pressure Posted: 06-23-07 02:39am
I am experiencing severe tiredness but
still trying to exercise. Blood pressure
too low in last week - now 80 / 70. US
Physician - Cardiologist - and Philippines
Physician disagree on treatment. US
Physician wants me on COREG and switched
me from taking IMDUR 80 - 1/2 tab twice a
day to taking COREG 25 - 1/2 tab twice a
day. I know COREG takes a while to get
used to as it did in the beginning. But I
feel chest congestion and experience
severe shortness of breath (not to point
of passing out or anything like that) for
several minutes when first start activity.
Then I can proceed after resting for a
couple minutes with mild shortness of
breath. I am caught in middle between
physicians. My PRIMARY CONCERN is how to
increase blood pressure. Normal for me
while on drugs is 120 / 80. What should I
take or stop taking? I DO HAVE
DEFIBRILLATOR implanted APRIL, 2006 in
anticipation of trip to Philippines.

With so many risk factors present in your
case (being overweight, smoking, family
predisposition…)it's not a surprise that
you have been experiencing congestive
heart failure (CHF). Chest congestion,
breath shortness and fatigue could be
attributed to CHF but are probably not due
to low blood pressure. In fact, low blood
pressure may be beneficial in this case
because high blood pressure worsens CHF.
One of the purposes of the CHF therapies
like prescribed diuretics, ACE-inhibitors,
cardiotonics and the like is to reduce the
blood pressure. However, when low blood
pressure begins to cause problems like
vertigo, disturbed vision, or syncope you
might consider treating the low blood
pressure. Additionally, it is worth
noting that you didn’t mention any
symptom that can be due to the low blood
pressure, so your self-diagnosis may not
be correct.
COREG (Carvedilol) is β and α1 sympatic
blocker that is often used for treating
CHF together with diuretics,
ACE-inhibitors and cardiotonics.
IMDUR (Isosorbide mononitrate) is a
coronary dilatator that is used for the
prophylactic treatment of angina pectoris;
that is, it is taken in order to prevent
or at least reduce the occurrence of
angina. You can use IMDUR if you are
experiencing chest pain due to angina
pectoris. IMDUR is not used for treating
CHF.
Both COREG and IMDUR can cause hypotension
as side effects.
