Tmj Locking
Posted: 06-25-07 18:33pm

I've had my TMJ for about 4 years now, and it has never locked before.
Until tonight.
I wasnt paying any attention to how wide I was opening my mouth.
Luckily, it wasnt THAT wide when it locked...
...but it locked and I had to move it to get it back into place.
I'm really frightened and I dont know what to do.
We dont have any money to visit the TMJ doctor again.
I already have a bite guard but I feel like that's not working.
I think that was started the pain (since it felt fine a couple of days ago) was when I started putting ear plugs in my ear to block out the noise that my sugar glider was making.
I'm not sure...but I'm really scared.
I dont think it's normal for a 16 year old teen to be having TMJ, I thought that was when you get older?

dont be scared. Its not odd to have tmd at an early age---I was born with it----I got really bad at 14. Tmj is not necesarily and "old lady " problem. I know a 4 year old girl that has it pretty bad.

what was it that you think started the pain? opening wide? What you need to do is exercise the joint and muscles so that you dont loose range of motion. just open as far as you can and hold 5 seconds. same with moving side to side and forward. use hot and cold packs on and off for 20 min. If it hurts too badly---take ibuprophen with lots of water and food.

You may want to explain your financial situation to the doctor. Sometimes they are willing to do what is called a charity case.(dont talk to the secretary--youll get nowhere---talk to the doctor himself)

dont worry about being scared. I know how that is. Ive been there. Im still scared of it. that is normal. for you to be haveing trouble with your jaw--unfortunately---is normal for you as you are a tmj patient. I wish it was different for all of us. If you need anything im right here. You feel free to email me or pm me for anything.

Oh and by the way--What is a sugar glider?

A sugar glider is a pet. A small, furry rodent. Do a google search then click on images.

My jaw locks too, at least once a day. I'm 25 and have had TMJ for about 3 yrs, really badly for about 6 months.
