Q: above Average Baby

My baby measured in at 3.1 lbs at my 28 week sonogram. (this was 4 weeks ago). But at my 20 week sonogram she measured right on track (12 oz) My doctor told me that the baby was "above average", after this 28 week sonogram. I asked what does that mean, she said it could be genes, etc., I do have a tall family...so I'm thinking that may be it, I don't know. Has anyone ever heard that news before? I mean, HOW BIG will my baby turn out to be?! Shocked Very Happy

Try not to panic! Smile I was told the same thing at my scans, by saying above average they just mean your baby will probably end up slightly bigger. The average in the U.K atleast is 7.5 lbs although I hear of babies all the time that are over that! and if your family are tall its highly likely your going to have a longer baby! Smile

I was told not to read to much into it though! all babies grow at different rates, some babies grow alot then slow down where others go the other way and some just grow and grow and grow!! Personally I think mine has slowed down alittle but I will ask more at my appt on friday!

Just ask at your following antenatels whether the baby still seems to be big, and as I said try not to worry as 'above average' doesnt have to mean huge!! Smile

my baby is measuring slightly above average as well. it just means they think the baby is going to be a bit bigger. i was over 9 pounds when i was born and my sister's baby was over 9 pounds. i just come from a family with big babies.

the baby doesnt really put on fat (weight) until the last 6 weeks or so..
i wouldnt be to worried..my baby's been at around 6 lbs since 33 weeks or so...the average baby is around 7 lbs so measuring a bit big isnt too big of a deal..our bodies are pretty amazing..

u/s can be off as much as 3 lbs either way. I say don't get too scared because it could change. My baby measured big too so I don't think that you are alone in this.

Yea I'm in the same boat. Jack was 7.2, I was 7.1 but our baby is measuring 1-2 centimetres ahead on my fundul height and I'm rather big for 28 weeks so yep, I bet she'll be massive. I really didn't want her to be over 8lbs cos man thats gotta hurt. But my mind is at ease since I heard the bigger the baby the easier labour cos our muscles have something bigger to grip and push downwards. I think Paige will be between 7 and 9lbs.

They kept telling me that my son was going to be huge when he was born, because of how big he was measuring. I even had to go for weekly ultrasounds to monitor him and my water because they were concerned. He was 7 pounds 8 ounces, which is average.
