I've never heard it being recommended 5 days after the period.

This is how starting the pill normally goes:

Day 1 starters: These women started the pill on the first day of their periods. They are protected immediately.

Sunday (or any day) Starters: These women started the pill on some other day aside from the first day of their period. They need to use protection for one week, 7 days, and then they too are protected.

Once you're protected that's it, you're safe. When starting a new pack you don't have to wait one week each month.

She is also totally safe during the placebo weeks.

So, it sounds like your girl fits into category two, which means that after one week, she will be protected. If you are nervous, use condoms for the first month. It's what I did.
