My Mother in Law had a stroke in April. After she recovered, she was responsible for her own self care, such as bathing etc. About 11 days ago she noticed a red spot above her hairline area on her groin. She tried to treat it with antibiotic cream thinking it was just chafed or a "risen?" After 5 days of this, she finally told us about it. At that time the redness had spread almost the width of her body. I took her to the doctor and they said it was possibly cellulitis and recommended she go to the hospital for IV antibiotics. After two days of antibiotics, they went in and cut open the affected area to let it drain. At this point, they put her in ICU because she was dehydrated, running fever and "a little septic". The surgeon also said he thought she was suffering from a spider bite. After one day in ICU, the surgeon came by in the morning and told us she would probably be in ICU at least one more day. When we went to visit that afternoon, they told us the "hospitalist" had given orders to move her to the floor. This was yesterday. This morning when my husband went to visit, the nurse informed him we needed to take special precautions because she had been diagnosed as having MRSA. She also ran fever this morning. When the "hospitalist" came in, he asked how she was feeling, she said her incision site hurt (she nearly cries when we get her up to go to the bathroom) but she felt OK. He never touched her or looked at the incision site. He said they had identified the "bug" as MRSA and said he thought she could go home today Exclamation What Question She can't get out of the bed by herself, she has staph, is still running fever, and you want to send her home? Does anybody know what the "normal" protocol for treating this is. They were giving her an IV of clindamycin and sodium chloride/ O should also add that besides being 75 years old she has a compromised immune system because of previous leukemia (now in remission)
