Teenage Daughter with obsessive compulsive anxiety disorder
Posted: 07-03-07 14:29pm

My daughter of 17, is currently on Luvox as she was diagnosed with anxiety and slight obsessive compulsive disorder. I know a lot of what worries me is also pretty much normal teenage times. Her moods swing terribly, She is either up or down. When confronted (and I have tried many different ways of doing this) she reacts with hurling insults to whoever is confronting her. What she says can be incredibly hurtful. Her next appointment with her psychiatrist in end of July and I intend to try and speak to her privately. Can anyone offer any help to me !!!!!

Use a scare tactic... make it known to her that being nasty to you and others will only make it so that she will have to do things on her own since that moment.

Also, I don't think you've explained to her well what anxiety really is. If a person is acting really negatively to it, then that person thinks that anxiety is the worst thing on this planet. You need to convince to her that anxiety is nothing more than just a necessary emotion that is needed for us to survive - without it, we wouldn't be able to make it.

Also, start introducing her to stress management and relaxation techniques. She just needs to calm down. Once she calms down, she will be better.

Good luck!

Thankyou for replying to me. Unfortunately she is refusing any help as she says she doesn't need it. This was after a major fight though, so I will raise the issue again when things have calmed down. She is also doing her matric, and this is making her anxious. She is an "A" student and sometimes puts a little too much pressure on herself. after our argument, which I tried to start as a discussion, I told her that she is basically on her own and needs to take responsibility for what she says. Deep down I know that she doesn't mean everything she says but bottom line is she has to learn to think before she says something mean. Thank you so much for your kind help !!!
