Orangey-yellow Liquid With My Stool...?
Posted: 07-07-07 09:45am

A little background: I am 24 years old, female, and currently weigh 105 though I was 128-130 before I became sick.

This all started 7 1/2 months ago with vomiting 10 or more times a day with mild pain in the left abdomen behind the rib. My first CAT scan showed that my pancreas looked enlarged so they did another one. The second one came back normal.

I was referred to another doctor who decided to look into my gallbladder. Sure enough my gallbladder wasn't functioning, though there were no gallstones. I promptly had my gallbladder removed, but I was still sick.

My doctor checked my paperwork and noticed that an upper GI scan had revealed a reflux problem. I went on a strict diet and took Nexium for three months. This reduced the vomiting to about once a week. As time goes by though I'm becoming intolerant to more and more foods and and vomiting more and more frequently. (Currently the list of food I can't eat are: anything containing more than 2 grams fat, tomatos, yogurt(fat free), cottage cheese(fat free), carbonation, caffeination, alcohol, I eat fat free ice cream however it gives me serious gas, soups, broths, the only way to drink anything is to spread a 12 oz drink over 4 or more hours, strawberries can sometimes be tolerated and other times can't, and once I start vomiting I can't eat anything for at least 4 hours) A strange thing that I noticed is that when I do vomit, sometimes 8 or more hours after I ate, the food that comes up is completely solid and undigested, especally vegetables. Also sometimes something will come up that wasn't the last thing that I ate, as though the one food bypassed the other on the way up. Also the pain in my abdomin has become much worse and is almost constant.

After the three months I returned to my doctor who decided to have my try taking a stool softener for a month. Unfortunately, in order to have the stool softener work I need to drink lots of liquids which I can't do without vomiting. Even one 12 oz glass of water will make me vomit. I called him after one week and told him I couldn't do it anymore.

I've been scheduled for an endoscopy and a colonoscopy which will happen this coming thursday. In the mean time though something new has happened:

Lately with my bowel movement there is an almost fluorescent orangey-yellow liquid that comes out. It floats above the water which makes me want to describe it as oily. I've found limited information that might point to this being a malabsorbtion problem. Before this happened I was afraid that I was looking at colon cancer. Now I'm thinking maybe there's a problem with my liver or pancreas? Unfortunately this started on a friday night and I can't call my doctor until Monday. I was hoping someone here might be able to help me understand this new problem... I'm sorry this was so lengthy, but I'd rather give you all the information that leave something important out.

Thank you

I have had this happen to me and it was due to stress and not having anything at all in my stomach. If you're vomiting repeatedly, that is probably why you have it. I think it's stomach acid.

I've seen stomach acid and bile before in my vomit, though, and that was more of a greenish yellow, though just as bright. This is orangey. You could be right though, and it just looks different when it gets to the other end...
