Posted: 07-08-07 00:51am

Hi,

I'm 18 and i have been on the pill for about more than a week and
I recently had unprotected sex with my boyfriend, he was unsure that he withdrew it on time and left some sperm in me. Is there a chance that i am pregnant? can i please get any advise on what i can do ?

thanks,
Amber

If you've been taking the pill on time every day (an hour's difference is nothing to worry about) for a whole week then you are safe!! Smile

No form of birth control is perfect, so of course there's about a 2% chance you're pregnant. But I wouldn't stress over 2%!! You are safe, enjoy sex!

Is this the first month that you starting taking the pill? If so, most of the pills that I know of suggest having protected sex until at least after the first pack of pills is done. Don't fret though, usually if you have gotten your period it means that you are not pregnant. sometimes your period gets thrown out of whack when you initially start taking the pill. You can either wait until next month to see if you get your period (which may seem like an eternity) or you can get a pregnancy test from your doctor or the drug store. I am not entirely sure if the home pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy at this point, you would need to ask the pharmacist about that. From what you have posted it doesn't seen like you are pregnant, but it might be better to get a test to make sure.

For future reference, if getting pregnancy is a concern for you it might be better to use condoms in combination with the pill, as the withdrawal method is not a good form of birth control as precum (containing sperm) seeps out before the man ejaculates. I used to do it that way and I never had any pregnancy scares.

Hope this helps!

One week is the actual time needed for the pills to be effective for almost all brands...

I agree...one week is the time-frame needed for most pills to be effective if you're a Sunday starter. If you're a day one starter, most pills are effective immediately. Read the info leaflet that comes with your pill to be certain. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Some doctors will be overly cautious and tell you to wait a month while on the pill before having sex without a condom as well, but it's usually not necessary.

My bad. I just remember when I started taking the pill that both my doctor and pharmacist told me to use condoms during the first month.
