Weird Baby Names

okay. i'll admit i have a bit of a peeve
(just a little bit!) when it comes to
people giving their kids "unique" names.
i just wonder, are they doing it for their
child or is it like a vanity plate on a
car? are they just wanting people to say
"oh wow that's so creative" or "how did
you come up with that?" like their child's
name should be a conversation starter. in
other words, who benefits from giving a
kid an odd name that they will have to
explain for the rest of their lives? the
kid or the parent? in new zealand they
have a law that lets the government veto a
name if it is deemed too outrageous. they
used the veto only once when a couple
named their kid "4real". seriously,
4real. and while i'm not saying the
government should be deciding on baby
names, what are the ethics of naming your
baby? shouldn't we take into account what
effect the name will have on the child's
life? is the novelty of a made up or
otherwise odd name worth causing anxiety
to your kid?
"Parents who make up bizarre names for
their children are ignorant, arrogant or
just foolish." Psychologist Albert
Mehrabian of the University of California,
Los Angeles, on his study looking at how
people reacted to names. Traditional
names aroused positive feelings, but
alternative names did badly (The Guardian,
London, 29 April)
there are actually people who have named
their kids things like syphilis and
metallica.

It is really popular among the chavs
(white trash) to call their children by
'unique' names and it really grates on me
every time. I particularly hate the
double barrelled names like Cortnee-Jade
and Kylee-Ann or, for boys, Beckham-Kyle
and Keanu-Lloyd.
Such names are trashy, scummy and
laughable.

I was teaching in an inner city school and
came across the name ".Tomorrow's" [last
name] on the attendence sheet. I was
like, "uh, Tomorrow's?" and she rolled
her eyes and informed me that her middle
name is ".Star" and that's what she goes
by, "duh".

I've watched that .Vanessa. My husband and
I laughed the whole way through it. I am
scared that I want to name my first girl a
name that is too unique. I want to name
her .Cadence .Christine. I don't know how
people will respond to .Cadence.

Name them with anything that comes from
the heart - whether it's Jimmy Buffet or
Cadence. As long as you don't just do it
to get some props from your neighbors, you
won't go wrong.
Also - consider the sound of the name. Is
it harmonious? Does it remind you of
someone you love, did you hear it on MTV
Cribs?
Good luck to all!

I just thought of this... i have kind of
an odd name. I've run into one other
person who's had it, and a couple
celebrities have it as well. I like my
name, i like the uniqueness of it, and I
like how it helps people to remember me.
I don't like having it spelled wrong all
the time and having to spell it out, but
eh, that's the price to pay.
I like .Cadence, musikmaker.

I love the name. I am a professional
musician so I think it fits very well.
My name is not unique but it is spelled
uniquely. It is .Courtnie and nobody ever
spells it right. I had to have my pastor
correct the bulletins this week because he
wrote in my baby shower announcement that
me name is spelled .Courtney. Well,
whenever I went to check on my baby
registry I noticed that if you spell it
that way my registry doesn't come up. I
don't want people to think I lied about
where I am registered!

cadence isn't too uncommon. it was ranked
214 in the .u.s. for 2006 (edit: it was
only 959 in 2002, it's rising fast!).

My grandmother's name is .Alliene (I think
I spelled it the way she does lol).
My mother's name is .Colletta.
My name is .Krystyna.
We seem to have a long line of naming our
daughters obnoxious names that are common,
but spelled oddly. My name is actually the
russian spelling of "christina", so it's
not like it's a fake name or a fake
spelling.
In my family's geneology, there's a lot of
... "extravagant" female names. I
personally will be naming my first
daughter ".Evangeline". Eva, ("ee - vah",
like "seed", not "ay - vah" like "say")
for short. I'm called .Tyna for short lol.

I love evangeline! Did you see Nanny Mc
Phee? I love that movie!
People think that Geneva is an unususal
name, but it is a family name, so it
really didn't seem that unusual to me. I
have a friend who named her daughter
.Laurel .Ann .Hardy (Laurel and Hardy).
My mom grew up with a girl named Ima June
Bugg.

We named our daughter .Alyvia. Maybe
that's trendy and trashy in somebody's
opinion. I really don't care. I feel I
have valid reasons for giving her the name
she has.
Olivia was always at the top of our girls
list. When we found out we were having a
girl, we decided that .Olivia was our
daughter's name. Simple, right? But
.Olivia has consistently been at or very
near the top of popular baby name lists
for a number of years now. I didn't want
her to be one of 50 .Olivia's in her
classroom.
And what really broke .Olivia for me was
my husband's mother. We were chatting one
day, and she mentioned how much she was
looking forward to meeting her little
"olive oil". Umm, excuse me... "olive
oil"? I don't think so.
We decided to change her name, but we were
both in love with .Olivia and had come to
know the rumbly little critter in my tummy
as an .Olivia. Finally we decided on
.Alyvia (pronounced as ahh-live-ee-ahh
instead of ohh-live-ee-ahh). It looks
beautiful in print, it's more unique than
.Olivia, and it eliminates that "olive
oil" situation.
Does that make her name trashy and trendy?
I really don't care. We love it, and I
think we picked it for reasons that feel
valid to us.
