Worried About My 3 Weeks Old Baby Posted: 07-09-07 15:32pm
Hello everyone, my 3 weeks old baby is not
having a bowel movement for 7th day today,
I'm worried cos I never experienced it for
my 2 other babies. I want to know if it is
normal to a baby of not having bowel
movement that long. please let me know who
ever read this message.
thank you

Both of my children did this, and it drove
me absolutely nuts. My dh called me the
"poop police". I was told it was
completely normal, esp. for breastfed
babies, but 7 days is a long time. If
your doc's office has an "ask-a-nurse"
line, I would give them a call. I had to
use very creative methods, digital stim,
ky jelly, and suppositories to get my kids
to go. They were just sluggish, I guess.
Does your child seem to be in distress?
Pulling knees up to tummy and crying?
It's probably worth a trip to your ped to
be sure ther's nothing going on.

as I was reading your reply, I was also
trying to call the Pediatric Clinic on
this Army base. I told them about my
baby's situation and she said the doctor
on call is gonna call me back anytime
today or early tomorrow to find out wether
I need to take my baby to the clinic or
not...
I noticed my baby is acting the same as
before, she wakes up and cries for milk
and sleep again after I burp her. but I'm
still worried now, until I hear from her
pediatrican.

I hope that little one goes soon! It
certainly does make moms worry.
How is Fort Carson? My nephew is going to
be stationed there soon!

as usual am still waiting for the call
from the pediatirc clinic. I called my
husband and he said that we need to take
her to the ER now that I worry that much
but I told him to wait from the doctor's
call and see what they are gonna say, coz
I dont want to go to ER and wait there for
how many hours and find out that my baby's
situation is normal and common( I hope)
and for now I'm still looking for an
answer online while waiting for the
call..
I like fort Carson, I like the area but
not my husband lol! he said this base has
a lot of issue and its under invistigation
by the pentagon. there's also an issue in
my husband's unit, like the people he work
with, I really don't know the story coz am
not really much into the situation. but
speaking of area, oh i like it here...
talk to you later.

i don't think it's anything you need to
rush to the er for. i think i read that
some babies can go up to 10-12 days
without pooping. if she doesn't seem to be
in pain or uncomfortable i'd just wait for
the return phone call.
you could always try taking her
temperature rectally. sticking the
thermometer in may stimulate things and
cause her to go.
my daughter went almost 2 weeks not
pooping, when she was breastfed, i got
woried but it was nothing to worry about
but also high iron formula can constipate
them, i tried giving her 2oz of juice and
the thermometer, warm bath everything, if
they dont seem to be in pain or discomfort
i dont see a need to worry, also feel the
babies tummy if it is rock hard then they
are prob stopped up.
as usual am still waiting
for the call from the pediatirc clinic. I
called my husband and he said that we need
to take her to the ER now that I worry
that much but I told him to wait from the
doctor's call and see what they are gonna

army bases suck too lol, i am at one, its
harder to get in for pediatrics too it
seems, at every appt for them i end up
being there almost 3hrs unless its right
at 1pm and its the first one after there
lunch break then they get seen right away
any other time its 2-3 hrs im there.

thanks guys, your messages really helped
me alot, I'm a little bit comfortable
about the situation. as usual she has not
poop today it's her 8th day. the doctor's
office called this morning and said that
it is unusual for the baby not to poop for
this long specially when she's breasfed. I
told the nurse that am trying to give my
baby a prune juice mix with my milk and
she said I can do that 2X a day and I did
once this morning and am gonna do it later
this afternoon and hopefully she's gonna
poop this time. I've read also that I need
to massage her tummy and excercise her
legs and said this would help, I did
yesterday and today still no result.
my baby have an appointment tomorrow
morning, and just can't wait to see the
doctor so I will feel better and my
worries will completely go away.

Never thought of the prune juice, I guess
I always thought that was a little to
young to have have that. I put a
tablespoon of Karo corn syrup in with a
little water in a bottle. Along with
breast feeding, if you can get her to suck
on this and get some down, this helped my
daughter. She'd go for a 8-10 days until I
started this.

I found relief just now coz my baby just
had her poop few minutes ago. I really
feel so pity watching her pushing it hard,
she cried big time just to push it. she
made it and now she's sleeping good like
an angel.
I think the prune juice that I gave her
helped a lot, thank God for the relief for
my baby. I don't think am gonna take her
to the doctor tomorrow since she's doing
ok now...

I did the karo syrup religiously every
day. I really think it helped.
