Feeling Hypo At Normal Bg
Posted: 07-09-07 16:39pm

I have had reasonably well-controled type II diabetes for several years. My blood glucose levels have never gone higher than about 160 any time that I have measured them, and normally they are much lower (about 120) between/after meals and between 100 and 115 fasting. My HbA1c is about 6.7%. I never get truly hypoglycemic--the lowest I have measured it is about 88. Yet I find that if my blood glucose is below 100, I feel classical hypoglycemic symptoms--headache, nausea, shakiness, fatigue, etc. Recently while I was on vacation and doing a lot of walking, I got so nauseous that I actually threw up on three different occasions when my blood sugar was still about 95-98, and eating something like half an Atkins bar or a few almonds made me feel better within a few minutes, so it wasn't some other kind of nausea (eg. bad food).

I know that people with severe diabetes (>250) who suddenly are brought back into normal range can experience these symptoms at normal glucose levels, but since I have never been that bad, I am at a loss to know why this keeps happening on a daily basis. My doctor just says that some people react like that, but that is not a very helpful answer.

Why does this happen? Should I just learn to tolerate these symptoms in order to keep my blood sugar as low-normal as possible?? It is annoying and embarassing, particularly the vomiting.

I am a type 1 diabetic. One thing that can make you feel like that is a fluxuation in Bg. You may be monitoring your levels and not notice it unless you test all day long. One thing you can try is to eat more ffrequent, but smaller meals to keep yourself from fluxuating as much. Hope this helps you, puking gets old real quick.
