Update On Brian
Posted: 07-11-07 10:24am

Thanks everyone for your support. I am writing this at a patient computer on the NICU floor.

We are still in the hospital. I am loopy being on pain medications, but I am also getting a wee bit emotional. Brian has taken a turn for the worse. Last night, he had even greater difficulty breathing so they had to intubate him. He has been doing better until a few hours ago when they stated he was having difficulty breathing given a good amount of oxygen. The staff is currently giving him an echocardiogram to check to see if he has any rare heart conditions they could be missing. There are about 8 people surrounding his bed right now checking his condition.

Now the theory is he was born with premature lungs. Nathan was born at 41 weeks and he even had some difficulty breathing. He wasn't too bad so he didn't need NICU. If this is the case, then my baby really needed to be a full term or even beyond full term for lung development. He just wanted to come out and I was in active labor. There was no way of knowing this would happen.

First the doctors will examine the echocardiogram and if that comes back normal, they will be giving him surfactant. They stated that if underdeveloped lungs is the problem, the surfactant should start working within hours. I pray that will help.

I can't wait to just hold my baby. I strongly believe in immediate bonding time with your baby after birth but my poor lil' guy didn't get that. I probably won't get to hold him for at least a few days. I will be dismissed in a day or two and will most likely be leaving the hospital empty handed. This will be extremely emotional. There are babies in the NICU who are more sick and smaller than Brian, so I am still thankful that the situation isn't worse.

I am exhausted and am in pain. I am writing this post on a double dose of pain medication. I am surprised I haven't fallen alseep just by writing this.

First of all congratulations! Brian is just gorgeous, you must be so proud. Secondly, hopefully you will find out soon why he is having so much trouble breathing. I know that it is hard right now and especially if you have to leave him behind but try to remember that he is in a safe place, getting the help that he needs. I had to leave my son in the I.C.N. for the first six days and it was hard but he got better and I felt more relieved in knowing that I wasn't bringing home a sick baby. I wanted to make sure that he was nice and strong and healthy. Which I am sure you will hear that really soon.

Try to get some rest and I will keep you and Brian in my prayers!

I want you and your family to know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers. Feel free to pm me if you would like to talk, as you probably know my little one got out of the NICU about a week ago after being in there for a month. Remember to take time for yourself, you need to rest. If you can't be strong for yourself you can't be strong for Brian. I also know how you are feeling about not being able to hold your son, I was not able to hold Tyler for over 2 weeks after he was born, I would cry when I went to visit him because I was afraid he wouldn't know who I was when I did get to hold him, but be assured that he will know who you are and even though you can not hold him at this time, he knows when you are around, he knows your scent. Are his doctors doing routine blood gasses on him? If so are the levels of oxygen coming back okay? If not you may ask the doctors if nitricoxide would help him. I am not sure if this would help your son or not, but it did mine a world of good.

Aww Karin Sad I'm so sorry to hear that. Little Brian's been fighting for most of his existance, so I really think he has an angel or two in his corner. And not just pretty white angels either. I'm talking about warrior angels, baby!

I can't imagine how hard it is to see your baby going through that. Your family is definitely in my thoughts sweetie.

I am glad that they have you on pain meds and are keeping you semi-comfortable! I am so sorry what you are going through with .Brian, I am sure it is awful not being able to hold your baby, hopefully soon they will get down to the bottom of this and he will get better soon, it sounds like he is under good care. Know that you and .Brian and your hubby are in my thoughts. Brian is such a handsome little baby!

Everything will get better soon. I'm prayer for Brian, you and your family. My friend delivered at 27 weeks and her little boy was in the NICU for 2 months. He's now 18 months and healthy. It'll go by quickly and he'll be in your arms soon.

i totally missed this post! i'm so sorry he's having to keep fighting so hard. he's gonna be a real tough little guy. i am praying that you will be able to hold him and take him home soon. i think if you are able to talk to him that will let him know you are near by and like someone else said, he will know your smell when you are near him. he's not going to forget who carried him for 9 months that's for sure. you've been through so much! i hope you can stay strong. you have such a beautiful family and you all seem very close so i hope you all can lean on each other right now and get through all of this together. i'm going to say prayers for you and light a candle for you and your guys. take care and stay strong!
