ulcer or gerd symptoms ?
Posted: 05-22-08 08:33am

I have had really bad stomach soreness, rib soreness that radiates to the middle of my back. Both sides of my ribs are sore. I also have stomach soreness and indigestion with gas. Are these normal symptoms of an ulcer or gerd? Particularly the rib soreness that radiates to the back? I have had an upper GI barium which the md said was showing possible gerd. I was on prilosec twice per day which stopped working and he then put me on nexium 40mg twice daily which helps somewhat. I also was diagnosed with an benign hepatic hemangioma. I'm wondering if anyone had any comments on my symptoms etc. thanks in advance

Your symptoms sound like gerd. Ulcer pain is typically a midsternal, burning, gnawing sensation, and can be quite severe. Ulcer pain is generally relieved by eating but will return once the food empties into the small intestine. Have you seen any pattern with your symptoms and the type of food you have eaten? Some people have specific foods which trigger the symptoms. A food chart or diary may prove useful in this case. You can track which foods trigger the symptoms. Do you take simthicone for the gas pains? This can help with that aspect. Avoiding white flour products often helps with gerd. Try to use whole grain breads and pastas. I hope some of this is helpful.
