Weed and panic attacks
Posted: 03-17-08 07:18am

Well, about a year ago I quit smoking weed. Every since I quit i've been having panic attacks. I am getting better with them and I can for the most part deal with them. Sometimes it is difficult but I have found ways to keep myself occupied and can work my way out of them. My questions is this - During the winter months every year I get bloody noses. Sometimes i'll blow my nose and they'll be some blood in the tissue or sometimes it will just bleed for a short period of time and then stop. My dad had them as a kid and so did most of his side of the family. My blood pressure is alittle on the high side but nothing that is that big of a concern. atleast not right now seeing as I am only 20 years old. Having the bloody noses during the winter is something I have come to accept and live with. I figure it is just the weather and things like that. I have never in my life gotten one in a summer month. My problem now is that when I get alittle blood in a tissue now, or a full on bloody nose, it causes a panic attack. I know that is making it worse because during a panic attack your heart beats faster which would cause more blood to circulate which causes a worse bloody nose. I was wondering what I could do to help prevent bloody noses, or what I could do to relax myself when I get one. I have been to doctors recently and been evaluated and told I was fine other then depression and panic disorders. My mother is on depression medication, so its in my past too.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

I used to get pretty bad nose-bleeds my self...Mine was due to heat instead of cold, but I definately would say that it has to do with the weather. It might be that the cold causes the veigns/what-not to get brittle/irretated when it's cold and more prone to injury.

I understand when you say that the anxiety makes it worste...I would get the same effect, whereby it would just be a tear-drop of blood but when I see it, it starts streaming...*shudder*.

What usually helps for me, is the following:

1. Tilt your head back.
2. Put a cool damp cloth on the back of your neck and forehead.
3. Lightly pinch the upper part of the bridge of your nose.
4. Keep your eye's closed so you don't have to see the blood Wink

PLEASE don't try the following...as I can not vouch for the outcome. I just want to hear if anyone else has an opinion on it

Someone once suggested "sniffing sugar"???!?!?!

I hope this helps somewhat

It would also help, when you are having a bloody nose (besides doing all that seraph said) to make sure you are controlling your thoughts- keep in mind that it is just a bloody nose, you are going to be fine. I know you know this, but when panic takes over it takes a lot of work to keep that in mind!

Ok... and sniffing sugar? I have friends who used to sniff those little pixie sticks (full of flavored sugar, kind of an adolescent dare thing) and it GAVE them nosebleeds. So I don't think it would help Wink

Then I'm glad I never toke that advice Wink

Come to think of it...it was my sister who said that and I think she was being mean-hearted. She has always thaught me kinda "whimpy" and "whiney"...well thanks sis, hope you enjoy the news that I found out this week that I have Marfans Syndrome...meaning I am weak as you always thaught.

*blush* ... I can't believe I just said that...it was kinda mean...yet I can't get my self to delete it...*confused*
