When can I give my son baby food?
Posted: 04-14-08 13:36pm

My son is a lil passed 3 months old and acts like he is starving all the time, even after being fed his bottle. Should I mix some rice cereal in his bottle? When can he eat baby food & what kind should I start him on? Thanks ladies. =)

No mixing cereal in a bottle. That is a no-no.

A quick google gives these results:
Quote:
When is my baby ready for cereal?
Always ask your doctor when starting cereal is best for your baby. Every baby is different, so age is not always an indication.
Physical signs baby may be ready are:
Sits with support and has good head control.
Doubled birth weight and weighs at least 13 pounds
Continues to be hungry after 8-10 breast feedings or 32 ounces of formula in a day.

Should my baby's diet include cereal?
Yes. In fact the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends that infants be introduced to iron fortified infant cereals at about 4-6 months of age depending on the baby's developmental readiness. Two or more serving per day of iron-fortifed infant cereal....can meet an infant's iron requirements at this age....

When should I start feeding my baby solid foods?

When babies are 4 to 6 months old, they start to lose their tongue-thrust reflex (pushing their tongues against anything that is put into their mouths) and they are ready to start trying solid foods.

How do I feed my baby?

First, introduce solid foods when your baby is well rested and comfortable, such as after a nap. Your baby should be sitting up and well supported either in a highchair or in your lap.

Never force your baby to eat. If your baby starts crying or turns away, then it may be too soon for your baby to attempt solids and you should try again in a week or so. In the meantime, you should continue to feed your baby breast milk and/or formula.

What should I feed my baby?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends rice cereal as the first food to give your baby. You can mix some of the cereal with breast milk or formula and feed it to your baby with a little spoon designed especially for babies. Your baby will probably only eat half a teaspoon initially, but very quickly will start taking 2 to 3 tablespoons of food.

Most doctors suggest feeding your baby cereals in the following order:

Rice
And from the 8th month of life:

Oatmeal

Barley

Wheat and mixed grain cereal (introduce last to reduce risk of food allergies)
After your baby has mastered eating cereal, try these strained vegetables, starting first with more easy to digest yellow then moving to green:

Carrots

Corn

Squash

Sweet potatoes

Green beans

Peas

Avocados
Next, your baby will probably enjoy some unsweetened, whole milk yogurt. Your baby will then be ready to try mashed or pureed fruits:

Applesauce

Bananas

Peaches

Pears
The last food group to introduce is meat, which can be harder for your baby to digest. This would include:

Beef

Chicken

Turkey

Lamb
How will I know if my baby has food allergies?

You should feed your baby a new food exclusively for three or four days before moving on to the next food, so if an allergic reaction occurs you will know what food is suspect. Additionally, add a new food group each month and avoid offering meats and certain cereals until the 8th month of life. Allergic reactions can include the following symptoms:

Diarrhea

Insomnia

Irritability

Rash on face, especially around the mouth

Runny nose

Severe diaper rash

Vomiting

Watery eyes

Wheezing

I didn't start giving Kaylee any baby food or cereal until she was a few days from turning 4 months old. I started out with rice cereal & once she had that down I mixed sweet potatoes with it, then started giving her just plain sweet potatoes. Then we went on down thru all the veggies then fruits. We didn't stay on baby food too long though, I think about 7-8 months she was eating almost everything we were eating. Just don't rush it!

I think the dr's give the okay. If you haven't had your 3 month check up then ask when you go in for that.

I can't really give any advice because Luke eats food that 'normal' babies don't eat until they are a few months older than him. We feed him whatever the dietician or his CF dr says to eat which is high fat and nutrient rich foods.

I found this site really helpful. It gives you tips on when to know when your baby is ready and how to introduce the new foods.

Feeding tip
• Your baby's digestive tract is still developing, which is why solid food is off limits for now.

I would give it another month or so just to be on the safe side.

Don't give him food before checking with your doc to be on the safe side. Mika was 13 weeks when she tried rice and then she tried fruits and veggies around 6-8 weeks later. If you do choose to give him rice now then do it with a spoon not a bottle

We put cereal in Gabe's bottle's by order of his doctor. He was spitting up after every feeding (even when he was only fed like, 3oz). So we tried cereal in his bottles & his spitting up stopped.

Other than that, he started eating from a spoon after his 4mos checkup. We started giving him single grain rice cereal mixed with stage 1 applesauce.

We did that with Luke after he was dx with acid reflux. It stopped the reflux but was too hard on his tummy. We ended up using Thickenup.

How is Gabe now? Does he still need thickener in his milk?

Nope! He's just fine, now.

Although sometimes I feel like he is a little skinny.
He's 13mos old & weighs 21lbs.. Which is the 25th percentile,
I think. But I still feel like h eneeds more meat on his bones!

Thankyou ladies! My son spits up almost evertime he has a bottle too. I havent had his "3 month check up" cuz up here they wont see him until his fourth month unless I have good reason (cold/flu or what not) so i'll check then i guess. I did ask my ped. when i could start him on baby foods today & they told me i can start now cuz my son is 17 pounds @ 3 months and is strong enough to hold his head up for a while on tummy time. and cuz he had more then doubled his birth weight. they also asked me how his tounge reflex was, the way i described they gave me the ok but said rice cereal from a spoon for starters, once a day to see how he adjusts & to call if any issues.

Here in the uk, the recommended age is 6 months, but you can obviously start earlier. You'll know yourself when your baby is ready to start solids. We started william at 3 months because milk was just not enough for him. He was constantly hungry

My daugher is still being breastfed and didn't start any baby foods until almost 7months. When she was about 3 months old she was acting hungry a lot and spitting up and I would feed her more and she would fuss and spit up more. Turned out she was getting gas from having too much milk. Sometimes babies act fussy and suck on their hands and stuff because they are having gas pains not because they are hungry. They will suck on a nipple when it's offered to them because that comforts them, but people often think they are starving when they actually have some other discomfort and the eating and eating is just making it worse.

Just saying. People are always saying that their babies can't get enough to eat without solids but if they can survive exclusively on breast milk for 6 months and more, it's probably something else bothering the baby.

My nurse said starting them early on food is easier on the parents sometimes but does nothing for the baby and can sometimes be harmful in that it can cause anemia and/or digestion problems.

I completely agree. I don't feel like it was easier at all and I plan on waiting until Destin is 5-6 months.
