When I Go From a Cold Place to a Hot Place, I Get Terribly Itchy Posted: 12-10-07 02:38am
Beginning every late fall, every time I go
outside and then come inside (from a cold
place to a hot place), I get itchy -
unbearably itchy. This itchiness can last
anywhere from thirty seconds to fifteen
minutes and can often make me very
uncomfortable. I always have to take off
my coat and start scratching immediately
after walking into a building (as long as
it was somewhat cold while I was outside).

I get itchy too going from cold to hot. I
don't know that there is anything that can
be done about it.

I have this condition too.
It is called idiopathic urticaria, meaning
it is itching caused by many things, but
doctors aren't sure why it happens. The
symptoms can last from when you are in the
cold temperatures (or whatever the case
may be) until many hours, or in severe
cases, days afterwards.
I will get it from the heat, from the
cold, from swimming, from hormonal
changes, etc. It will become worse when
aggravated by exercise, like walking
quickly to get out of the cold!! Usually I
just avoid going outdoors for more than a
few minutes to keep myself from breaking
out in hives.
You can take an OTC drug beforehand to
help with the symptoms if you know that
you will be in an "itchy" situation, such
as Benedryl. There are others that are
non-drowsy, so you might want to go with
them. You can talk to your doctor about
which one might be the best for you to
take on an "as needed" basis.

I don't get hives, though.

You don't need to. Sometimes mine don't
actually show up in big welts but it
itches anyway....sometimes my whole leg
that was exposed is swollen. It depends
on how long I was out, how bad the
condition is, stuff like that.....but I'm
pretty sure that's what the problem is.
