When will Mircette be effective? Posted: 06-12-08 16:20pm
I gave birth to my first baby 7 weeks ago.
I re-started my birth control pill
(Mircette) on May 31st. My first period
since my pregnancy began on June 9th. I
have nearly completed 2 weeks on the pill.
In the patient instructions it states
that if I take my first birth control pill
on the first day of my period I do not
need to use a back-up method of birth
control once my period is complete. Can I
assume that when my period is over I can
safely have sex without the risk of
pregnancy?
My OB/GYN office has a standard answer
that I have to complete a full pack of
birth control pills before I can have sex
without using a back-up method of
protection . . . but that doesn't seem to
be the case from what I have read online
and from the patient instructions.

I've been told numerous times that you are
protected after completing a week (7 days)
of pills....so if you've been taking it 2
weeks you should be protected...someone
correct me if i'm wrong....

You are accurate!
BUT... IF you start pills when you are on
your period you are protected
IMMEDIATELY!!
Any other time you must wait 7 days.
The reason why doctors say 1 cycle is
because they assume you will somehow mess
up and forget pills, or take them late. 1
cycle gets you into the swing of things,
but is not necessary if you are careful!
