who to tell about bipolar symptoms ? Posted: 06-26-08 12:29pm
If I have things to tell...about hearing
things, appetite and sleep things...should
I tell my therapist or the nurse
practioner that prescribes my meds?

Both. You will have an outlet with the
therapist and the therapist may have some
suggestions about how to handle some of
the issues. Let the nurse practitioner
know so she/he can evaluate your
medication and tweak it if it needs it.
Having a double pronged approach to
treatment is always a good idea.

I agree with Antigone Posted: 06-27-08 03:05am
Both should be made aware of the symptoms.
My only suggestion would be to try and be
seen by a psychiatrist that deals with our
illness every day. The tendencies of
general practitioners, NP's and PA's are
to try and treat illnesses that comes
about from tests and not that of the
mental part. The tendency to doll out
medications that the drug reps say are
great and leave samples are usually their
drug of choice and may be the worst thing
for you.
I have seen where medications have
actually intensified the symptoms instead
of quelling them.

I would agree with trying to see a
psychiatrist if that is possible for you,
a np is just not qualified to deal with
the intricacies of mental illness and
medication. Otherwise, yes, tell both
about what you are experiencing.
