Wisdom Teeth and the TMJ? Posted: 03-31-08 00:03am
So here's my dilema: I have TMJ disorder.
A year ago, I began showing symptoms of
TMJ disorder (clicking, limited jaw
opening, pain...) I went to see a TMJ
specialist who corrected my bite with an
appliance I have to wear all day long, and
of course a night appliance as well).
Things were getting better, and I even
felt 100% after about 2 months) (its
almost been a year now by the way). So
physiologically, my jaw is where it should
be now, no more pressure on the disc,
nothing. BUT, 2 months ago, I began
getting sore again, so I went to get my
appliance reajusted. The pain didn't go
away. And actually got worse. I felt
wayyy worse than I did before this
appliance. And I was sore in places I
wasn't feeling pain previoulsy. I felt
like every single one of my cranio-facial
muscles were at war or something! After
many pill popping weeks, fixing of
appliances, relaxation techniques, my
muscles calmed down, but I'm applying ice
to my face every day, I'm still eating
soft foods. Its just not getting better.
Now I'm 22, and none of my wisdom teeth
have been removed, 2 are impacted, and I'm
not quite sure about the other 2... last
year they weren't ready to come out. I'm
not feeling any pressure on my gums or
anything though. But I was just wondering
whether or not my wisdom teeth, even the
impacted ones, are trying to tell me that
they need to come out? I'm trying to
figure out why after getting better from
TMJ disorder, my condition all of a sudden
started deteriorating.... If anyone's
got anything for me, looking forward to
hearing what it is.
Thanks,

ok ive had this happen to me. what kind of
doctor are you going to? It would be a
good idea to get the wisom teeth pulled.
that way you dont have what you have done
for your jaw messed up by the teeth
comming in after you get the jaw realigned
etc. pm me. i have an idea for you.

He's a dentist, whose practice is limited
to TMJ. I don't think you've understood
my concern though. I'm not concerned that
my wisdom teeth will come in and mess up
my jaw. I'm thinking that they might be
putting pressure on my jaw, its muscles,
nerves, whatever, but they are not comming
out or near comming out at the moment. I
should just ask my dentist to take a look
at my latest x-rays to see if that is a
possibility. Was your experience similar
to this one?

yes--I had mine pulled--before they came
in. im just saying that it will mess
things up further and you should do it
before you do anything else. I had mine
pulled--now there is no possibility that
my bite will be thrown off in the future
now that i have had extensive work done.
