wisdom tooth... Posted: 03-17-08 20:06pm
Yesterday i started feeling alttle pain in
the very back of my jaw just before i went
to sleep. I thought nothing of it and
thought maybe when i was eating i got
something caught there and it became sore,
so went to sleep.
This morning it was still hurting, so i
checked it out with a mirror and it looks
like something is poping out. but im not
100% sure.
If it is my wisdom tooth, will i have to
get it pulled right away?
I would rather wait till after my
pregnancy because the pain is agonizing,
but i dont know if i have a say on it.
can anyone help?

A lot of people don't even need to get
their wisdom teeth pulled. Unless it's
impacted , there's no real reason to
remove them. You'll have a say unless it's
very serious. My teeth did the same thing
a year ago, and I went to the dentist and
lo and behold I had to get them out. Also,
I'm not sure if you can get them out when
you're pregnant because of the stuff they
use to put you out. The operation may be
dangerous at this stage. Otherwise, if
you're able to, I would suggest getting
them out BEFORE you give birth. The
operation really takes it out of you, and
I was feeling down for 4/5 days
afterwards. You definitely don't want to
try raising a newborn (and if they do need
to be removed, then they'll want to do it
soon as possible) while in that condition.

From what I've heard, you might as well
just wait til after your pregnancy to do
anything. For them to determine whether
they needs out or not is by an xray, which
I'm sure you know is a no no during
pregnancy. and if they say you do need
them out, you can't have any type of the
medication the use to put you under while
being pregnant.
I'd suggest orajel (ask doc first though)
or even a teething ring. Sounds odd, but
they actually work if it's 'itchy'.
Basically anything you'd give to a
teething baby. I think mine are coming in
(or at least some type of molar) and I sit
there and chew on a washcloth when it gets
bad.

I would think you would have to wait until
after because I couldn't get a cavity
filled while I was pregnant. It was a
crappy experience, I had two cavities and
they didn't want to fill either of them
but one was super bad so they had to do
it. They didn't even give me a full dose
of novacaine or xray the tooth the way
they're supposed to. It was a miserable
experience because I still had some
sensation. For the other cavity they told
me to go to the drug store and buy a
temporary filling because they didn't want
to risk doing it.
You may not even have to have it pulled.
Every year for around a month or two my
wisdom teeth seem to come up a bit more.
It hurts then it stops but the dentist
said that mine don't need to be pulled.

thats intresting, most people i know have
said once they come up they should be
pulled cuz its really painful to keep
them. my plan was to wait and see what a
dentist says, and i would rather get it
out if it needs to be out after the
pregnancy, because it would be a lot worse
if i had it done during my pregnancy.
The teething ring sounds like a good idea,
i'll try it if it gets worse.
thanks for helping guys

It all depends if you have enough room or
not. They usually come in at an angle to
push your teeth forward, hence the pain.
But if there's room, they don't bother
with it. I know my sister still has hers
because she had enough room, so the
dentist didn't bother with it.

It isnt painful to keep them if you have
the room for them. it also isnt necessary
to pull them out unless its rotted.

yeah they hurt coming in, once they're in
they don't necessarily have to hurt. if
there's enough room it's fine. Mine only
hurt while they're coming up. Once they
stop then I'm fine. You have to remember
this tooth is literally ripping its way up
through virgin gum. A little dramatic but
there it is.

i have all of my wisdom teeth. they are
fully grown in and never caused me any
problems other than the initial pain of
them coming in when i was 16-18. the
dentist said i "had" to have them out but
i just didn't go back to see him. i think
he was more interested in my dental
coverage to be honest.

Gum and bone all have to shift for it. It
can be painful. But like everyone here has
said, that doesn't necessarily mean it has
to come out. Mine were compacted, growing
directly into the teeth in front of them
and causing more crowding than was
necessary. Not only did the back of my jaw
hurt where the wisdom teeth were, the
front of my jaw and teeth were so
pressurized from all that pushing.
You can have necessary dental treatments
when you are pregnant. But I would think
your dentist may choose to wait on wisdom
teeth until you are no longer pregnant.

it definitely depends on your mouth. My
friend had perfect teeth before his came
in... and now that he didn't have them
taken out, they are crooked and you can
tell they are crowded. I love my teeth, so
if dentist says they need out, they are
coming out one way or another!
