Xanax, Tramadol, and Darvocet, and pregnancy Posted: 03-19-08 09:19am
I am currently taking 1mg of xanax xr 1-2
times a day for about the past yr for
panic attacks and my ptsd, I have been on
a couple different anti-depressants
however the most recent is 150mg of
effexor xr wjich i've only been taking for
less than a month. My concern is that I
just found out I am pregnant (told very
early in prego) n am worried that the
xanax will harm the fetus. I've had some
doctors say its safe and others say its
not. I then read that its a class D
member and am now very worried I dont want
my baby to be deformed. I've tried not
taking any of my psych meds a couple
months back but had serious mental
disstress, increased depression and
anxiety I was recently approved for my
retirement due to the traumatic nature of
my injuries but am worried what will
happen to both the baby and I if I stop
and if it may have already harmed the
fetus. I am also prescribed darvocet and
tramdol for severe neck and back pain as
well as migraines can taking either of
those be harmful?

Xanax (alprazolam) belongs to pregnancy
category-D which means that there is
positive evidence of human fetal risk
based on adverse reaction data from
investigational or marketing experience or
studies in humans, but potential benefits
may warrant use of the drug in pregnant
women despite potential risks. Children
born of a mother who is receiving
benzodiazepines (alprazolam is one of
them) may be at risk of developing
withdrawal symptoms from the drug during
the postnatal period. Also, neonatal
flaccidity and respiratory problems have
been reported in children born of mothers
who have been receiving benzodiazepines.
Tramadol (opiate analgesic) belongs to
pregnancy category-C which means that
teratogenic effect on animals is proven
but there are no adequate and
well-controlled studies in humans.
Darvocet (dextropropoxyphene) is also an
opiate analgesic that belongs to pregnancy
category-C and D (if used for prolonged
periods of time).
You can try to abort all these medications
because they have real potential to harm
your fetus.
Your condition will probably get worse
after going off these medications but your
baby will be fine. That is because anxiety
disorders are not inherited but acquired
after delivery.
You may want to consult your psychiatrist
about this.
